I
didn't set out to make an album when I wrote the songs for
The Sleeper's Opera. That doesn't mean some of the songs
weren't written with the intention of being included in
an album one day, or that I have never thought of creating
an album. It just means this particular group of songs,
recorded in the lo-fi way they have been, were brought together
like the accidental, magical collision between one man's
chocolate and another man's peanut butter.
No two songs were recorded in the same way. This has a lot
to do with the fact I have never been professionally trained
as an audio engineer (minus a brief stint taking classes
at Unity Gain in Fort
Myers, Florida, but what they teach you mainly prepares
you for working in a studio, not working at home on a crappy
PC with cracked software and a sound card with compatibility
issues.)
It also has a lot to do with the fact I work on poor equipment
which breaks and crashes and occasionally gets lost/misplaced,
so I'm always having to find new ways to get my ideas across.
I see my music as a concrete way of representing parts of
myself, though, processes and all. So to me, the ways it
came about are just as much a part of who I am as the music
itself.
